Fulton House Tintype portrait session

Fulton House Studio

The portraits done at Fulton House Studio are more sophisticated than the ones I can do in fifteen minutes in the small, art fair booth. Fulton House Studio also affords a larger space and set, making for a more comfortable experience for larger groups in particular.

The sessions are either one or two hours long, affording clients more options on how the portrait can be photographed. The portraits at Fulton House Studio can either be photographed using Studio Lighting or exclusively with natural light. The portraits taken using only natural light, Sunlight Sketches are best suited to adults as the exposure times are about 6 seconds long. Studio Lighting on the other hand, captures an image instantaneously the moment the flash goes off. These images are sharper and have more contrast. It is for this reason that it is best option for families with young children. Studio Lighting can be used also for creative effects not possible with natural lighting such as silhouettes, and other unusual lighting set-ups.

Both lighting options – Studio Lighting and Sunlight Sketch - are available for either the one hour – Original session - or two hour – Deluxe session.

Original Tintype: a one hour tintype session

During these hour-long portrait sessions I can craft 4 to 6 tintype plates. These portraits can be photographed with either the Studio Lighting or Sunlight Sketch (natural light) option, and during this session I can typically photograph 1 or 2 compositions and combinations of the client’s choice.

Both images on the left are Sunlight Sketches whereas the ones on the right are Studio Lighting samples.

  • The Original session is $100.
  • Included is one Classic or Shadow Box framed tintype and digital copy.
  • The additional tintypes and/or digital copies may also be purchased.

Deluxe Tintype: a two hour tintype session

During the two hour Deluxe portrait session I can craft about 8 to 10 tintype plates, often with various compositions to choose from. The longer session also allows for participants to come into the darkroom and view how the images come to be - a process most people find fascinating. These portraits can be photographed with either Studio Lighting or Sunlight Sketch (natural light) option.

The Deluxe session is particularly suitable if children or pets are being photographed. More images can be photographed, at a more relaxed pace, which is wise when photographing kids and their ever changing expressions.

Special note about Sunlight Sketch tintype sessions

Using only natural light as originally done in the 1850s makes for a particularly unique tintype experience. The studio for the Sunlight session is transported outside into the photographer’s backyard. The look of the portraits is softer as the light is more diffuse, which makes for a very flattering portrait. One of the challenges with using natural light is that the sitter needs to sit still for about 6 seconds. It is for this reason that the Sunlight Sketch session is generally more suitable for adults. Another consideration is the weather: if it is really overcast or of course raining, the session needs to be rescheduled. For more samples please click on this link, Sunlight portraits
